– Energy Capital Partners (ECP) has raised $8.1 billion for its sixth flagship equity strategy, ECP VI, reaching its hard cap and significantly exceeding its initial $5 billion target.
– The fund’s hard cap was increased during fundraising to accommodate strong investor demand.
– ECP has now raised more than $41 billion in total capital commitments since its founding in 2005.
– Investment focus: power generation, renewables and storage, and sustainable infrastructure.
– ECP sees major opportunities from rising electricity demand driven by data centers and AI, grid complexity, industrial onshoring and electrification, alongside growing government and corporate focus on energy security and grid resilience.
– Fund VI follows ECP V, which closed in May 2024 with $4.4 billion in commitments.
– Fund VI is already deploying capital, including announced acquisitions of:
DCC, a global multi-energy sales and distribution company.
– EnergySolutions, a provider of integrated nuclear power lifecycle solutions.
Grain LNG, Europe’s largest LNG terminal.
– Recent realizations include the sale of Calpine to Constellation Energy, as well as exits from Cornerstone Generation, Symmetry Energy Solutions and Liberty Tire Recycling.
– Doug Kimmelman, Founder and Executive Chairman: ECP sees a multi-decade transformation of global energy systems, driven by AI, industrial onshoring and electrification, requiring significant capital and deep operational expertise.
– Tyler Reeder, President & CIO: Fund VI gives ECP the scale to pursue the current opportunity set, with a focus on hands-on value creation rather than simply owning assets.
– Fund VI attracted a diverse global investor base, including sovereign wealth funds, public and private pensions, insurers, asset managers and family offices.
– Emily Zovko, Senior Managing Director: Strong support came from existing ECP investors, while the fund also attracted new institutional investors, reinforcing confidence in ECP’s long-term track record.
